Joanne Royaltey

Consumer Horticulture & Invasive Species Program Associate

A native New Yorker, Joanne and her family have made their home in the Northern Shenandoah Valley since 1977. As a full-time mom, Joanne pursued her educational dreams, earning an AS at Lord Fairfax Community College and a Bachelors and MBA at Shenandoah University. Over the course of her career in the Northern Shenandoah Valley/Northern Virginia region, Joanne has had the opportunity to become a ‘community change agent’ and spent years developing expertise in the healthcare and educational arena including helping to secure many millions of dollars to support initiatives that make our communities healthier places to live, work, and thrive.

In July 2017, Joanne took early retirement and focused her energies on gardening, traveling, and grandchildren. While all were rewarding, she missed the passion of connecting people and ideas to make a positive impact in our community. Through her love of gardening, Joanne became an Extension Master Gardener in 2020 as a member of the Northern Shenandoah Valley Master Gardener Association. It was this experience that taught her about a vital community resource - the Virginia Cooperative Extension (VCE). When the opportunity came about for her to work at the Frederick County VCE office to assist with Consumer Horticulture and Invasive Species outreach and education, she was thrilled!  It felt like ‘coming home’ to a place where she could again use her knowledge, expertise, and passion to have a meaningful impact on our community.
